Assignment 1:
Hello! I’m Olivia Klee.
I’m that
girl that genuinely loves her friends and family and is obsessed with making a
difference in the world. And also obsessed with neuroscience. And Oreos.
I used to try to make goals for
myself for the whole school year but I’m just useless at thinking that far
ahead, so instead I’ll discuss some short-term goals of mine. This week, I want
to catch up on my Physics web homework and nail this singing gig in Winchester
on Saturday night. (What? You sing? Yes,
I just don’t tell a lot of people.) Yep, well that’s about as far as I have
planned so on to the next question.
This summer
was awesome. I spent the first month and a half as a volunteer coach for the
world’s-cutest swim team (Go Greenbrier!), and then I completed a six-week
internship at University of Kentucky’s Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular
Genetics Lab. This lab made sophomore year’s “Big Lab” feel like “Baby Lab”. I
started out knowing next to nothing and finished proficient in gene manipulation,
fly genetics, and the study of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The most meaningful moment of my summer was
when my mentor went on vacation and left me in charge of the lab. Even though I
accidently let a few flies out, that week made me feel like someday I could
really be a scientist.
This
summer, I also watched this video entitled “Pakistan Kid Dancing” on YouTube.
