Assigned seats! Aw hell nah. Doug, Ben, and I had it all mapped out. We were going to
sit next to each other and that was that. But with a last name of Cegelka, I was the odd man out.
But without these assigned seats I would’ve never really gotten to know Katie Chen and Rachel
Burns.
Unfortunately, tragedy has struck 4th hour AP Language and Composition. Rachel Burns
no longer sits next to me. I viewed myself as the peanut butter in the plain just peanut butter
sandwich metaphor that is my two “neighbors” in this class. And without the other piece of bread
this second helping after lunch is incomplete. Burns, Cegelka, Chen. When I walk in from lunch
everyday I see Katie and Rachel either in my seat, or somewhere else in the classroom chatting it
up. I typically hear the conclusion of their conversations as the bell rings for class to start. Most
of the time, it’s about work. Katie works at Cold Stone Creamery and Rachel is a hostess at
Logan’s Roadhouse. Their personalities to me is a cross between the carefree nature of
childhood, and the “time is money” motto that resembles a New York lifestyle. I can’t say I’m
surprised though. Rachel is from New York, and her New York Yankees lost in the playoffs. We
talked about the fact that I envied the fact that she even had a team to root for as my San Diego
Padres ended our phenomenal season 33 games out of the division. But I digress. Katie and
Rachel both have impressive work ethics that I envy. Both want to be successful. And Rachel
personally wants to go to Michigan University in the freezing cold. I have no doubt that Katie
and Rachel attain success in college that propels them into careers in the next 5 years or so.
