Assignment 13: Maggie Anderson

One of the most shocking things about being a Junior member of the Liberal Arts Academy at Henry Clay is the lack of summer homework. I find the bare minimum attitude of some teachers appalling.

Take math. Many Juniors take AP Calculus. And what did we get from that? One measly packet and all review. We just had to watch the videos helpfully provided for us and it wasn't hard at all. In fact we got grades, easy 100%s, simply for watching the videos. And don't get me started on English. Our first assignment was due halfway through summer. A month! Where's the rush, the panic the stressful, sleep-deprived all-nighters? And the other assignment was partially based off our summer homework from last year. What good is it if we don't have to complete every stage over one summer.

Don't even get me started on the classes that didn't assign anything at all. I'll have you know I was able to take two trips with my family this summer, on which I didn't think about my work at all. A total of almost fifteen days were spent miles from the assignment sheets themselves. It's like teachers at our school think it's okay if we don't spend all summer doing work we haven't been taught how to do for a class we haven't set foot in yet. Not to mention how this looks to colleges. If I don't spend at least 14 hours a day, 365 days a year on schoolwork for the last two years of high school, how am I expected to write a good application and get in to a halfway decent college? Ridiculous.
